Description

The crop is used as leafy vegetable, its rich in vitamin A and C, protein and calcium.

Ecological requirements

Rainfall: 600-2000mm annually

Altitude: 0-1500m above sea level

Temperature: 15-300C

Soils: alluvial, sandy loam that are well drained and rich in organic matter.

Land preparation

Prepare fine seedbed as the seeds are small. Apply manure 3-4kg per meter square.

Planting

Plant seeds four months from harvestto avoid dormancy or heat treat in simmering water for 5-15 seconds followed by cold water treatment 5-15 minutes. Mix seeds with sand/soil for even seed distribution. Space tall varieties at 10cm by 30cm by 40cm, broad varieties 15-20cm by 45-60cm.

Top dressing

Apply 10g CAN per plant

Pest control

Nematodes: Practice crop rotation, drench with Trichoderma or use nematicides

Red spider mite: Spray with miticide eg dynamic

Disease control

Leaf spot: Remove older leaves, roguing

Powdery mildew: Spray appropriate fungicide eg score

Harvesting

Harvest between 120-150 days after planting when the flowers have been shed. Bind the stems into bundles and dipping in water immediately after harvesting.

Post-harvest handling

Extend shelf life by wrapping leaves in a wet cloth
